Hi, I’m looking to get into bmx and don’t know what size bike to get.?
Hi, I have spent too much money on the whole motocross phase, so I decided to only race on the weekends (to save money on parts for the bike, always fixing a 2-stroke.) I’m looking to get a bmx bike now so I have something to do with my time, and keep me in shape during the week when I’m not racing. I was wondering what size to get, and brand. any suggestions? I’m 16 yrs old, 6′2, 155lb.
I rode a 20″ and it seemed alright. I just don’t know if a 24 would be better, I wanna jump and I wanna be able to do tricks, like wheelies, and just some sweet stuff that I can learn.
Get the largest frame available in the bike that you like. A few companies offer a Pro XL size with a slightly longer top tube and you’d probably appreciate that, but just pick a bike and get the largest they have available. Plenty of tall guys ride bmx….it’s never the same fit as on a mtb or road bike.
I’ll second the recommendation to check out the 24″ cruiser bmx bikes, except that the wheels aren’t quite as strong (and there’s a smaller selection to choose from) if you get into big air and spins. Intense makes a really nice one.
Tons and tons of bikes out there…..so many companies. Most people seem to choose their bmx brand by the attitude of the company, the color of the frame, or the pro riders they sponsor. If you pay more, you’ll usually get better wheels and drivetrain, sometimes lighter components/frame. If you go $400 and up you’ll get a sweet rig.
Another idea is to look into 26″ street bikes…..you can still do a lot of skatepark freestyle on them, just not as easily. They do much better for dirt jumping, and they can do xc trails as well. Sounds like you might really like this stuff and the dj/park/hardtail freeride bikes might be right up your alley. Check out the Kona Cowan, Jamis Komodo, Cannondale Chase, Specialized P-series, Trek Jack, Santa Cruz Chameleon, Soul Cycles Roscoe…..tons to choose from. Same thing as far as frame size….16.5″ to 18″ is what you want…..bigger is better for you.
