The people that have answered so far have given no proof to the broken neck theory nor the life is over from frontal impact theory. Anything you wear will HELP out in a crash but the best thing is to stay on the wheels. I went down at 55mph with a half helmet on. No broken teeth and no facial injuries. Matter of fact? No head injuries at all. If I had been wearing a full face the results would have been the same. I landed on the SIDE of the head towards the top. A full face will NOT result in a broken neck because of the design of the helmet as a half helmet will not always result in facial injuries. The severity of the injury is directly related to the crash and impact area of the head. What WAS correct is that most crashes cause frontal impact of the head. The result will most likey be facial injuries if the face is unprotected. In a case of being thrown over the bars, the rider could either land on the face, the top of the head, or the back of the head sliding feet first. The latter could result in a possible neck injury but not neccessarily in them. Possible but not probable. Body (arms, legs, ankles, and back) are more prone to burns/rash. What type of helmet you wear is your decision. Turtle shells are the most dangerous because they offer very little, if any, padding and won’t keep your ears off the road if you should land that way. I know of one particular guy that lost his left ear last year. Torn off on the road.
