Are there kevlar bicycle tires for a 27′ 1′ 1/4″ wheels?
If so, who makes them or where can I purchase them?
I have an old Schwinn ten speed that has 27′ 1′ 1/4″ wheels. Unfortunately, the tires for that size rim are too thin to stand up to the uneven pavement and debris and potholes you find on the streets of Detroit.
I’m trying to avoid purchasing a new bike. Is there anything that you can suggest?
I’ve looked into:
* doing a retrofit to 700C rims so I have a better selection of tougher tires to choose from
* looking into tubeless tires
* avoiding road hazards (more difficult that it sounds…)

Yes…..not easy to find in shops, but any shop can order them for you. I’ve been really happy with the Panaracer Pasela tires….they come in a folding bead with a kevlar belt and aren’t expensive. Specialized (Armadillo) and Continental also make some decent ones, and both Nashbar and Performance stock some cheapies with a kevlar belt (or they used to…I haven’t looked in the last year or so). If you find the IRC tires, you might have issues with them, depending on your rim. They tend to fit loose and can creep off the rim. Ask your local shop if you can browse through their distributor catalogs and you’ll probably find a few to choose from.
I’ve been down the 27″-700c retrofit road a couple of times myself…..it’s not usually possible without major frame adjustment and fork replacement (and subsequent repainting), or at the least, a pair of extra-long reach brakes, if they’ll work. At one time, Sheldon Brown used to offer some homemade drop-bolt-hangers for this, but he quit offering them some time back.
Unless you really want to keep the old bike, it may be cheaper and easier to just buy a used older frame, or even a used modern road bike….you can frequently find them for $200-$400 and there are some really sweet rides out there.
I’m keeping an old British Falcon ride going and as long as I can get decent 27″ tires like the Panaracer, I’ll continue to do so. I just turned it into a singlespeed and it’s got lots of life in it. Old bikes rawk!
